Lionsgate UK have announced that “McQueen” will receive its World Premiere on Thursday 7th June at a very special event hosted in London’s Picturehouse Central which will include a live Q&A event with family members Janet and Gary McQueen, close friend and first assistant designer Sebastian Pons and Detmar Blow, friend and husband of Lee’s mentor and muse, the late Isabella Blow. The event will be streamed into collaborating cinemas nationwide. “McQueen” will then be on general release from Friday 8th June 2018.
“McQueen” is an intimate revelation of Alexander [Lee] McQueen’s own personal and professional world, both tortured and inspired. It is a film which celebrates his passion and genius fashion which were key features in his life.
“My shows are about Sex, Drugs and Rock n’ Roll. It’s for the excitement and the goosebumps. I want heart attacks. I want ambulances.”
As a self-described “unremarkable” working-class boy from East London, he harnessed his demons and went on to become a global one-man fashion brand and one of the most iconic artists of the century.
Portraying his life from his debut collection through to the tragedy of his premature death, “McQueen” is a film that evokes Lee McQueen’s unique vision, originality and maverick sense of humour is captured in never-before-seen home movies, audio tapes and “behind-the-scenes” footage shot throughout his career. This is stitched together with deeply personal interviews from close family, friends and collaborators and cinematic original material that takes us on a journey into McQueen’s mind.
On a personal level, McQueen has been one of my favourite designers for years. Ever since I began to take a vague interest in fashion as a child McQueen’s designs were always some I admired, I adored the “Savage Beauty” Exhibition at the V&A, and the first piece of McQueen I ever bought (from a charity shop but still I was so excited to finally own a McQueen piece) still remains hung in my wardrobe. Alexander McQueen was a true fashion visionary, there was no-one like him in the fashion world and has been no-one like him since.
