Celebrities you didn’t know have ADHD

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a condition that can present itself in many ways. Symptoms can include having a short or poor attention span, being forgetful, being unable to sit still, fidgeting and making impulsive decisions. It can often lead to procrastination, even when you seriously want to get things done. People with ADHD are often mischaracterised as ‘lazy’, but more often than not, they are trying very hard!

It’s certainly worked well for him as he is an incredibly successful artist with multiple Grammy awards under his belt!

Simone Biles

Simone Biles

Celebrated gymnast and four times Olympic gold medal winner Simone Biles has a unique story. Hackers revealed a list of athletes taking ‘banned substances’ and listed Biles amongst them for taking the ADHD medication Ritalin. However the governing body USA Gymnastics stated that this was known to them as Simone Biles had filed the appropriate paperwork and they confirmed that Ritalin did not give her any type of unfair advantage. Following this, Biles came forward and proudly said

Having ADHD, and taking medicine for it is nothing to be ashamed of nothing that I’m afraid to let people know.

Ryan Gosling

Ryan Gosling

Oscar-nominated actor Ryan Gosling struggled with ADHD as a child and had trouble reading. He was prescribed medication for the disorder and his mother quit her job in order to home-school him and create a more ADHD-friendly learning environment for him. It hasn’t held him back as the time away from public schooling helped him realise his love for acting and creativity, which has eventually led to a successful career in Hollywood.

Adam Levine

Adam Levine

The lead singer of Maroon 5, Adam Levine was diagnosed with ADHD at a young age. He said

I struggled with ADHD throughout my life. It was hard for me to sit down, focus, and get schoolwork done. My parents were patient and helped me, along with my doctor, to move forward with a treatment plan that worked.

As he got older, he received less help for his disorder which began to impact his career. Upon going back to the doctor, he was told ADHD doesn’t go away. He was able to get help as an adult and now is an advocate for ADHD awareness, making sure those with ADHD know that they aren’t alone and they aren’t any less capable for having the disorder.

ADHD and it’s symptoms can be difficult to manage but celebrities with ADHD show us that when the disorder is properly recognised, treated and managed, those symptoms can become something which help drive us. Symptoms and patterns can be channelled into positivity. Your ADHD doesn’t have to hold you back!
