Mean Girls, the teen comedy released in 2004, has been a huge staple to pop culture ever since it was released. Besides its iconic lines being turned into memes online, Tina Fey and Jeff Richmond came together to turn the film into a Broadway musical in 2018. Weeks after Deadline reported the Mean Girls musical will be adapted into a film at Paramount, People reported the Broadway hit will see a new addition to its cast: Sabrina Carpenter.
The 20-year-old actress and singer/songwriter first saw fame when she starred in the hit Disney Channel series Girl Meets World, from 2014 to 2017. Since the show’s cancellation, the star has moved on to releasing several full-length albums, embarking on world tours, and lending her voice to a few animated series. Now, Carpenter can add being a Broadway star to her already-impressive résumé.
On Feb. 11, the Mean Girls musical announced Carpenter will be starring as Cady Heron, beginning on Tuesday, March 10, all the way through Sunday, June 7. (For information regarding Carpenter’s specific performance schedule, fans can head to www.MeanGirlsonBroadway.com.) Lindsay Lohan originally portrayed the character in the 2004 film.
“I’m so excited,” Carpenter told People about her new role. “I’m such a big fan of the musical, the movie, the story in general, [creator] Tina Fey, and all these incredible people involved with the show… I can’t wait for the rollercoaster!”
“You only get these opportunities so many times in life,” she added. “You get so lucky when you get to create something new that’s never been done before, and you fall in love with it as you’re making it. But coming into this already knowing that I’m such a fan? And saying every one of those iconic lines? I can’t put it into words; it’s just going to be so thrilling. It brings a whole new energy into it for me.”
Shortly after the huge reveal, Carpenter took to Instagram to share photos of herself posing in front of August Wilson Theatre in New York City, New York, where the musical takes place. “Dis gon be fetch hope to see you there? March 10-June 7,” Carpenter captioned her post.

Also joining the cast on March 10 are Laura Leigh Turner as Karen Smith, Olivia Kaufmann as Janis Sarkisian, and Chad Burris as Damian Hubbard. They will join current cast members Reneé Rapp as Regina George, Krystina Alabado as Gretchen Wieners, Catherine Brunell as Mrs. Heron/ Ms. Norbury/Mrs. George, Kyle Selig as Aaron Samuels, Cheech Manohar as Kevin Gnapoor, and Rick Younger as Mr. Duvall.
“We look forward to welcoming the extraordinarily talented Sabrina Carpenter leading our company, alongside new and returning cast members, as we graduate into year three on Broadway,” the producers of Mean Girls said in a statement.
