At the end of 2017, I took the decision to quit my job and work from home as a freelance marketer.
It hasn’t been easy, and I’m still finding my feet four months later, but it was, without doubt, one of the best things I’ve ever done.
Not only do I get to wake up every morning and spend time working on projects that I care about, but I can do it in my pyjamas!
Below, I’ve put together five things that have happened to me since I started working from home.
1. I’ve burned through my Yankee collection
Who knew that working at night with a candle would be so relaxing? Before January, my Yankee collection was getting a little out of control, but I’ve managed to burn through the majority in the past few months. It’s nice to have a scented candle on in the background while you’re working – it certainly helps to keep me calm and relaxed. It doesn’t make sense financially to burn through a large Yankee jar every week, so once they’re gone, it’ll be tealights and unscented candles for me!
2. I’ve become obsessed with YouTubers
When you work from home and spend hours of the day on your own, having a YouTube video playing in the background can be great. I’ve found a couple of awesome YouTubers who I watch every day, usually in the morning, while I’m answering emails, working on social media and doing admin. I probably spend a little too long watching videos nowadays, but hey, it’s fun!
3. My stress levels have diminished
Working in a pressurised environment and managing people and their workloads was tough. I can’t tell you how many days I had a “fk this” moment and wanted to walk out of the door because of stress. Working for myself, I’m finding it much easier to manage my workload and work at my own pace. I’m not saying I’m always chilled, but I’m certainly more relaxed and positive.
4. I’ve got more time to eat better
When I was working in an office job, it was so much easier to nip to a supermarket and grab a meal deal (I’m looking at you, Morrison’s £3 meal deals!). Working from home has given me more time to eat better, and drink more water. Rather than grab-and-go options, I enjoy taking ten minutes out of my schedule to make a fruit juice or prepare a healthy lunch.
Sure, I still like to munch on snacks while I’m working, but the freedom to eat what you want, when you want, and being limited to whatever you have in your fridge, has certainly helped me eat better.
5. I’ve ruined my sleeping pattern
Being able to work whenever I want, for however long I want, has no doubt ruined my sleeping pattern. Some days, I want to work right through to midnight, and others, I struggle to stay motivated and want to spend the evening binging Netflix or going shopping. It’s something I’m trying to work on because I hate getting up late. It ruins my schedule and makes me groggy for the rest of the day.
If you’re considering working from home, there are lots of things that you’ll need to prepare for. I’m still figuring out how to motivate myself and keep on top of my finances and invoices, but it’s a journey and it’s so much fun! Let me know how you cope with working for yourself in the comments.
I’ll be back next month with my next Fuzzable Blog. Have a great May, everyone! 👋
