A new realm of storytelling emerges this Friday, October 6, 2017, when ABC’s hit fairytale drama Once Upon a Time begins its seventh season.
Self-proclaiming the new season as a “requel,” part reboot and part sequel, writers and creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis are introducing a slew of new characters while keeping the heart of the show the same. A now-adult Henry (Andrew J. West) will be brought to Hyperion Heights, the show’s new setting, by his daughter Lucy (Alison Fernandez) because he no longer believes. Awaiting him in Hyperion Heights are his cursed family members, including Regina (Lana Parrilla), Hook (Colin O’Donoghue), Mr. Gold (Robert Carlyle), and his wife Cinderella (Dania Ramirez).
Returning to season one-like storytelling, it is the perfect time to tune into the show and become captivated with the new characters and stories. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Edward Kitsis says, “I think that part of the fun with this was being able to start over, and I think that if you’ve never seen Once Upon a Time, you can absolutely watch episode 1 and not miss a beat.”
Despite main cast member Jennifer Morrison (Emma Swan) departing from the show this season, the second episode, Morrison’s only contracted episode for the new season, will explain her absence so long-time fans aren’t left wondering about her whereabouts. The beauty of Once Upon a Time is the vast amount of stories that can be told; there is something for everyone. Long-time fans can appreciate the references to past seasons, while new viewers can start with a new story and then watch the first six seasons as background information ala Star Wars.
Other new characters include Lady Tremaine (Gabrielle Anwar), Princess Tiana (Mekia Cox), Drizella (Adelaide Kane), and Alice (Rose Reynolds). Yes, that Alice. This new iteration of the titular Wonderland character comes after the spinoff, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, received less than favorable viewership during its 2013-2014 run.
Returning characters include Belle (Emilie de Ravin), Zelena (Rebecca Mader), Gideon (Giles Matthey), and Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison).
The premiere, appropriately titled “Hyperion Heights,” airs Friday, October, 6, 2017, at 8 pm EST on ABC. A sneak peek from the premiere can be seen in the video below.
