Last night marked the premiere of the 2018 Video Music Awards, and this year’s VMAs was one for the books. The night was full of surprises and interesting quips, so we’ve brought you our top five favorite moments from the ceremony, in no particular order.
1. Nicki Minaj slaying every rapper. Live.

When Nicki Minaj’s new album, Queen, dropped on August 10, fans around the world were shook to find a song titled “Barbie Dreams,” on which the rapper raps about a ton of other rappers, tossing disses left and right. However, the VMAs come around, and Nicki performed the song live at a ceremony where a lot of the rappers she mentioned were in attendance. We give her props for always being bold, and always staying true to herself. Plus, her performance was one of her best ever.
2. Logic making a statement

At last year’s VMAs, rapper Logic made a statement with a performance of his hit song “1-800-273-8255.” This year, he performed his song “One Day” and made another statement. Toward the end of his performance, a host of Latin-American people were reunited with one another. In doing this, Logic hopes to show the current atrocity in America with the separation of Latin-American families by the U.S. government.
3. Shawn Mendes loving Brendon Urie’s performance

Us too, Shawn. This pop star was all too relatable when Brendon Urie from Panic! At the Disco took the stage to perform his song “High Hopes.” During the song, the camera cuts to Shawn gawking at Brendon Urie performing, and we’ve never related more. Brendon Urie’s voice shined, and the love shared between artists is always nice to see.
4. Cardi B’s baby stunt
Cardi B gave birth to her baby Kulture roughly one month ago and has since kept her newborn baby out of the spotlight. Viewers thought she was debuting her baby on television during the VMAs when the show opened with her holding a baby blanket. However, being the jokester she is, she opened the baby blanket to reveal a moon person award. The joke was hilarious, because as a viewer you could tell Cardi B was having so much fun on the stage – and we’re so proud of her for winning THREE different awards last night.
5. Tiffany Haddish being unprepared
We were all a little stunned when star Tiffany Haddish didn’t know Camila Cabello’s name – multiple times. But she went on to shade Fifth Harmony, to which Nicki Minaj later responded, defending Fifth Harmony member Normani. Overall, Tiffany was simply unprepared for her role in the VMAs, but it did add some interesting drama to the show.
