Winter is finally here, which means Christmas is just around the corner and the cold weather is starting to creep up on us. This dramatic decline in the temperature demands a change of clothing, so it’s time to start thinking about your winter wardrobe.
Layering can seem really complicated, but it’s not. Put simply, you’re just putting different items of clothing on top of each other to create a chic look. Easy right? It’s an essential part of every guy’s winter wear, and this simple style guide will ensure you’re staying stylish while layering up to keep warm.
GO FROM THIN TO THICK
The first thing to think about when it comes to layering is the order in which you want to layer your clothing pieces. Of course, there are loads of different ways to do this and it mostly depends on what pieces you’re layering together, but we recommend a thin-to-thick layer approach. The main reason for this is because during the winter we find ourselves travelling between hot and cold environments regularly, and so taking off the thickest layer first will help combat this.
However… it’s really important to remember that you should be able to remove an outer layer without affecting the rest of your look. Therefore, each piece of clothing you choose has to look great both as a standalone piece, as well as an ensemble.
AIM FOR TWO-TO-THREE LAYERS
To achieve that perfectly layered look, we’d recommend going for two-to-three layers. This will stop the outfit from looking too busy and reduce the risks of colour or pattern clashes.
For instance, start off with a light and comfortable base layer – this could be a long-line tee or even a turtleneck for the more daring. The second layer could feature a jumper or hoodie, of which could be a statement piece with a bold colour. To finish, the top layer needs to bring the look together, so we’d suggest a jacket like a windbreaker or overcoat.
CHOOSE COLOURS WISELY
With the basics covered, it’s time to talk colour. The colours of the pieces in your outfit should compliment each other well, and this becomes tricky when you have so many pieces involved in a look. Our advice is to keep the colours tonal. For example, your black, whites and greys will go really well together. Additionally, different shades of the same colour can look equally as nice. Colours can make or break the look, so choose carefully!
BE CAREFUL WITH PATTERNS!
Just like color, patterns are key when it comes to layering. Again, you don’t want to have too many patterned pieces as you’ll run a risk of the outfit clashing. We’d suggest keeping to one statement patterned piece, with the remaining layers being solid-color to complement it. This will create a very stylish overall look.
That’s covered everything you need to know when it comes to combating the cold in style and layering up this winter. Now it’s time for you to put it into practice and upgrade your winter looks.
