Piranha Plant has just launched in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and we immediately jumped into the game to test out this fighter. As it turns out, we’re completely loving its animation and fighting style.
If you haven’t yet seen Smash’s newest fighter in action, check out its reveal trailer:
Let’s get the obvious out of the way: nostalgia is a large driving factor in why this fighter is so much fun to utilize. We’ve been playing Mario games since we were children, so we’ve been combating and avoiding these plants for decades. Moreover, this game ignites nostalgia for another Super Smash Bros. game: Brawl. In Ultimate, Piranha Plant’s final smash attack sees a large plant with two cages attack the other players. Sound familiar? This large plant with cages is fought by players in Brawl’s Subspace Emissary story mode.
In addition to being nostalgic to both older Mario and Smash Bros. games, our plant friend is unique and even adorable in its fighting style. It whips its leaves, uses its pot to leap high into the air, spits toxic clouds, and can even summon spiky balls to injure foes. It’s so different from the other “traditional” fighters (you know, all the humanoid Sword fighters), yet it doesn’t seem too different due to the game’s wide roster of fighters. We do have King K. Rool and Duck Hunt, after all.
It is essentially the best kind of wildcard we could have asked for. It’s a character we never expected to see as playable, which makes playing as it that much more fun. The slight ridiculousness of the situation is precisely what is so captivating. What could be more fun than being a living, vicious plant and taking down not only sword fighters, Pokemon, and magical beings, but also Mario himself? It’s absurdly beautiful!
