Film Review: ‘Ready Player One’

Ready Player One released in theaters roughly one month ago in the United States, and it’s safe to say it is one of the best films of 2018 thus far.

The trailers leading up to its release did the film zero justice. Based on a novel of the same name by Ernest Cline, this Stephen Spielberg-directed film transcends reality and engrosses the viewer in the techno-magical OASIS in the same way it does its characters. A gripping dichotomy between our devastated world and the mystical, computer-generated OASIS is immediately established, building the basis for the film.

What the trailers do not tell you is how attached you become to the characters. The characters all have interesting quips about them that make them endearing, and you feel this attachment from the beginning. The film also holds a wealthy cache of popular culture references. The references make the film even more fun to watch not only because you understand them, but also because they are often obstacles which the protagonists must overcome. They range from King Kong to the girls from Stephen King’s The Shining, and they are all tastefully incorporated.

Set in the future of the United States, the film begs the viewer to contemplate our society and if we really are headed down a path where we will endlessly plug ourselves into an electronic program because our reality remains lackluster. The deeper philosophy embedded into the story makes the film that much more fun to watch and take apart.

On top of everything, the visuals in the film were stunning. The animated scenes felt extremely lifelike, and the colors throughout the film popped in vibrant fashion. All of these aspects combined make this film one that is easily re-watchable and enjoyable.
