‘The problem with doors is that they open both ways. There are monsters inside, and some of them are trying to get out…’

Ladies and gentlemen are you ready? We have a new book alert that you are definitely gonna want to add to your diaries!
UCLAN Publishing have only gone and done it again! The fast growing student led publishing house, have once again teamed up with New York Times Bestseller A.J. Hartley to produce another incredible YA title! From the author-publisher duo that brought you Cold Bath Street, comes a novel about to take the YA market by storm, Monsters in the Mirror.
For those who don’t know, UCLAN Publishing is a trade independent ‘not for profit’ publisher, based in Preston, Lancashire at the University of Central Lancashire. The university also runs the only postgraduate publishing programme in the North of England. Students on the course are involved with the running and decision making within the publishing house, involving everything from cover design preferences, illustration design ideas, involvement with authors and the reading of manuscripts before publication.
The cover design for the title is beautifully spectacular, with it’s strikingly bright colour palette which catches the eye immediately. The design definitely stands out and is nothing like anything which is on the market currently. All illustrations were created by the highly talented illustrator Manuel Sumberac, with design influences from UCLAN’s students. Each image is immensely detailed and perfectly portrays the steam punk vibe which is incorporated throughout the book.

The most exciting aspect as well as the most unique, is that of the lenticular portion which has been added to the front cover. This idea is extremely effective and has been a huge hit with it’s YA audience so far. A lenticular on the front cover of a book is not something that is often seen, if not ever seen at all, therefore if the success so far is anything to go by then the world is about to go wild for it!
When viewing the cover at one angle the monsters can be seen, however when the position is changed the children can be seen. This interactivity on a title is sure to grip it’s readers!

The lenticular it’s self was actually attached by hand to each copy of the book, which demonstrates the dedication UCLAN have to creating beautiful products.
The new title Monsters in the Mirror is set to be released on the 1st March 2019 priced at £8.99, and is the first book in what is set to be a trilogy. The second title is set for July 2019 and the third November 2019.

The suspense is over, we won’t make you wait any longer! Here is the synopsis of the first book:
‘Darwen Arkwright’s world is turned upside down when he’s forced to move from a small English town to Atlanta in the United States of America. Feeling out of place and struggling to fit in at school, Darwen seeks solace in a mysterious shop full of mirrors. It’s there that he discovers the ability to step through mirrors into different worlds – worlds beyond his imagination. Darwen befriends creatures including Moth, a tiny being with mechanical wings, but he soon learns that there is a terrible darkness threatening this new world…and only he can save it.’
