For those of us spending time at home while in lockdown, we’re probably missing some of our favourite fast food and restaurant items as most businesses remain closed for time being.
However, many of our favourite places to eat have shared recipes for some of their popular menu items – so you can make them yourself and eat them from the comfort of your own homes! So if you’ve been craving some McDonald’s or Pizza Express, then look no further…
McDonald’s – Sausage, egg and cheese McMuffins
McMuffins are an absolute staple on the McDonald’s breakfast menu – and we seriously question why McDonald’s, at least in the UK, haven’t considered doing their breakfast menu all day. In particular, we love a good sausage, egg and cheese McMuffin – and the fast-food juggernaut has shared that all-important recipe to make your very own.
INGREDIENTS:
English muffin
75g sausage meat
Eggs
American cheese slice
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Toast your English muffin until golden brown.
- Season your sausage meat with a pinch of salt and pepper, then shape into balls.
- Flatten into patty shapes and cook under a pre-heated grill for 6-7 minutes on each side.
- Brush the inside of a metal ring with some olive oil and place it in a small frying pan.
- Pout in enough water to cover the base, then bring to the boil.
- Crack the eggs into the rings, cover the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes.
- Once your eggs are cooked, assemble your McMuffins by layering the patty and egg on top of a slice of cheese.
- Then, finish with your toasted English muffin, using both ends as buns.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B_KIbPHjx1J/
It wouldn’t be a trip to Pizza Express without getting their iconic dough balls! You can buy the pizza chain’s pizzas and dough balls in supermarkets, although we don’t think they compare to how they taste in their restaurants. Thankfully Pizza Express has shared recipes for both their classic Margherita pizza and their dough balls – complete with garlic butter!
First up, it’s the Margherita pizza…
INGREDIENTS:
150ml warm water
One teaspoon sugar
15g fresh yeast or two-level teaspoons dry yeast
1.5 teaspoons salt
Two tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
78g Pizza Express passata (a tomato-based pizza sauce, which can be easily found in most supermarkets. But if you can’t find the Pizza Express version, then any other similar sauce shall do)
70g mozzarella
Pinch of oregano
Pinch of black pepper
One basil leaf
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Add the sugar and crumble the fresh yeast into the warm water.
- Allow the mixture to stand for 10-15 minutes in a warm place until froth devolves on the surface.
- Sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl.
- Make a well in the middle and pour the mixture in and a dash of oil.
- Lightly flour your hands, and slowly mix the ingredients until they bind.
- Generously dust your surface with flour. Throw down the dough and knead for 10 minutes until smooth and soft.
- Cover the dough and leave to rest until soft to the touch, but not too springy.
- Grease your pan with oil. Then either with your hands or a rolling pin, stretch the dough to your desired size and thickness.
- Stretch the dough across the pan, ensuring equal thickness throughout.
- Spread the passata across your pizza base.
- Tear your mozzarella and evenly spread across your pizza. Add a pinch of pepper and oregano, and some oil.
- Bake in the oven for 10-12 minutes at 230 degrees Celsius/446 degrees Fahrenheit/Gas Mark 8 until the crust is golden and cheese is bubbling.
- Once baked, leave to cool.
- Then slice and finish with a single basil leaf.
