Make your favourite restaurant’s food at home with these easy and delicious recipes

And they all look so tasty!

For those of us spending time at home while in lockdown, we’re probably missing some of our favourite fast food and restaurant items as most businesses remain closed for time being.

However, many of our favourite places to eat have shared recipes for some of their popular menu items – so you can make them yourself and eat them from the comfort of your own homes! So if you’ve been craving some McDonald’s or Pizza Express, then look no further…

McDonald’s – Sausage, egg and cheese McMuffins

McMuffins are an absolute staple on the McDonald’s breakfast menu – and we seriously question why McDonald’s, at least in the UK, haven’t considered doing their breakfast menu all day. In particular, we love a good sausage, egg and cheese McMuffin – and the fast-food juggernaut has shared that all-important recipe to make your very own.

INGREDIENTS:

English muffin

75g sausage meat

Eggs

American cheese slice

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Toast your English muffin until golden brown.
  2. Season your sausage meat with a pinch of salt and pepper, then shape into balls.
  3. Flatten into patty shapes and cook under a pre-heated grill for 6-7 minutes on each side.
  4. Brush the inside of a metal ring with some olive oil and place it in a small frying pan.
  5. Pout in enough water to cover the base, then bring to the boil.
  6. Crack the eggs into the rings, cover the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  7. Once your eggs are cooked, assemble your McMuffins by layering the patty and egg on top of a slice of cheese.
  8. Then, finish with your toasted English muffin, using both ends as buns.

Greggs – sausage, bean and cheese melts AND steak bakes

Greggs is truly a British national treasure, isn’t it? And to all of you who have been dreaming about their pasties, you’ll be pleased to hear that the bakery chain has shared recipes for not one, but TWO of some of the iconic bakes they have to offer.

Baked beans

Sausages

  1. Cut two squares of puff pastry and egg wash the edges.
  2. Put your beans and sausages into a bowl, and squash and mix them together.
  3. Put your bean and sausage mixture onto the puff pastry.
  4. Grate some cheese, and sprinkle on top.
  5. Put the other square of puff pastry on top, fork the edges and finish off with some egg wash.
  6. Put your bakes in the oven for 20 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius/356 degrees Fahrenheit/Gas Mark 4, or until golden brown.

Next, is the famous steak bake, and we can’t wait to make our own.

Beef stock

Cornflour (or flour) mixed with water

Now all that’s left is to hope that Greggs will also release recipes for their sausage rolls and chicken bakes!

Pizza Express – Margherita pizza and dough balls with garlic butter

It wouldn’t be a trip to Pizza Express without getting their iconic dough balls! You can buy the pizza chain’s pizzas and dough balls in supermarkets, although we don’t think they compare to how they taste in their restaurants. Thankfully Pizza Express has shared recipes for both their classic Margherita pizza and their dough balls – complete with garlic butter!

First up, it’s the Margherita pizza…

INGREDIENTS:

150ml warm water

One teaspoon sugar

15g fresh yeast or two-level teaspoons dry yeast

1.5 teaspoons salt

Two tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

78g Pizza Express passata (a tomato-based pizza sauce, which can be easily found in most supermarkets. But if you can’t find the Pizza Express version, then any other similar sauce shall do)

70g mozzarella

Pinch of oregano

Pinch of black pepper

One basil leaf

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Add the sugar and crumble the fresh yeast into the warm water.
  2. Allow the mixture to stand for 10-15 minutes in a warm place until froth devolves on the surface.
  3. Sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl.
  4. Make a well in the middle and pour the mixture in and a dash of oil.
  5. Lightly flour your hands, and slowly mix the ingredients until they bind.
  6. Generously dust your surface with flour. Throw down the dough and knead for 10 minutes until smooth and soft.
  7. Cover the dough and leave to rest until soft to the touch, but not too springy.
  8. Grease your pan with oil. Then either with your hands or a rolling pin, stretch the dough to your desired size and thickness.
  9. Stretch the dough across the pan, ensuring equal thickness throughout.
  10. Spread the passata across your pizza base.
  11. Tear your mozzarella and evenly spread across your pizza. Add a pinch of pepper and oregano, and some oil.
  12. Bake in the oven for 10-12 minutes at 230 degrees Celsius/446 degrees Fahrenheit/Gas Mark 8 until the crust is golden and cheese is bubbling.
  13. Once baked, leave to cool.
  14. Then slice and finish with a single basil leaf.

And now, the dough balls…

INGREDIENTS:

150ml warm water

One teaspoon sugar

15g fresh yeast or a two-level teaspoon of dry yeast

225g plain flour

1.5 teaspoon of salt

Two tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

Four teaspoons of butter

½ teaspoon of chopped garlic

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Add the sugar and crumble the fresh yeast into warm water.
  2. Allow the mixture to stand for 10-15 minutes in a warm place until froth develops on the surface.
  3. Sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl.
  4. Make a well in the middle and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil.
  5. Lightly flour your hands, and slowly mix the ingredients until they bind.
  6. Generously dust your surface with flour. Throw down the dough and begin kneading for 10 minutes until smooth, silky and soft.
  7. Leave dough to rest for 15 minutes, until soft to the touch but not too springy.
  8. Roll dough into one long 1.2-meter tube. Chop into 16 chunks and place them in an ovenproof pan.
  9. Leave dough balls to rest in pan for 30 minutes, then bake in the oven for six minutes at 230 degrees Celsius/446 degrees Fahrenheit/Gas Mark 8, until golden brown.
  10. Once baked, leave to cool.
  11. For the garlic butter, mixed the butter with chopped garlic together.

If you can’t get enough of Pizza Express, then head to their website, where they have also shared how to make dough balls parmigiana and cheese and bacon dough balls. Delicious!

Gourmet Burger Kitchen – Baconnaise, garlic mayo and blue cheese sauces

Can’t get enough of the delicious dipping sauces that Gourmet Burger Kitchen serve? Well, the burger restaurant has revealed all on how to make some of them at home – including that secret recipe for their famous baconnaise!

First up, the bacconnaise:

INGREDIENTS:

Cooked bacon pieces, chopped into small squares

Mayonnaise

Cider vinegar

Garlic puree

Black pepper

Tomato ketchup

Cayenne Pepper

INSTRUCTIONS:

All you need to do for this one is to mix a reasonable amount of all of the ingredients together in a bowl. That’s it, it’s as simple as that. However, make sure that you’ve cooked and chopped up some bacon beforehand.

The next sauce GBK shared a recipe for is the garlic mayo…

INGREDIENTS:

Two lemon zest, grated

60g parsley washed and stalks removed

Two teaspoon black pepper

½ teaspoon salt

One kg mayonnaise

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Lightly zest the lemons, removing only the yellow and no pith.
  2. Place the garlic, lemon zest, salt, pepper, and parsley into a food processor, and chop until smooth. Make sure there aren’t any lumps!
  3. Mix thoroughly into the mayonnaise.

And finally, the blue cheese sauce…

INGREDIENTS:

One kg mayonnaise

One teaspoon black pepper

400g gorgonzola cheese, rind removed

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Put mayonnaise and black pepper into a bowl.
  2. Crumble the gorgonzola cheese into the bowl.
  3. Use a whisk to mix the cheese and mayonnaise together thoroughly.

And if you’re also missing GBK’s burgers, you can buy GBK-style beef patties from most supermarkets!

Costa Coffee – Ham and cheese toastie and blueberry muffin

Although Costa is primarily known for their caffeinated drinks, there’s no denying they serve some tasty treats too. Luckily, they have posted how to make both the iconic ham and cheese toastie, and blueberry muffins!

First up, the ham and cheese toastie…

INGREDIENTS:

One tablespoon butter

Two slices of bread

Two slices of ham

Cheddar cheese

Mustard (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Melt the butter, then brush both sides of the slices of bread. Yes, you read that right. Both sides of both slices!
  2. Grate enough cheese to cover both slices, use half of it to cover just one of the slices of bread.
  3. Place the ham slices on top of the bread slices, and spread some mustard on if you are using.
  4. Put the other slice of bread on top to create a sandwich, then cover with the rest of the cheese.
  5. Place on a small baking tray, and place in the oven to bake for 10-20 minutes at 200 degrees Celsius/392 degrees Fahrenheit/Gas Mark 6, until the cheese has melted.
  6. Once baked, leave to cool before serving.

And for something a bit sweeter, here’s the recipe for Costa’s blueberry muffins…

INGREDIENTS:

275g self-raising flour

One teaspoon baking powder

75g caster sugar

Two eggs

225ml milk

One teaspoon vanilla extract

175g blueberries

100g unsalted butter, melted

  1. Sieve the flour and baking powder together into a large bowl.
  2. Add the other ingredients (except for the blueberries) and mix until combined.
  3. Stir in the blueberries with a metal spoon.
  4. Divide the mixture equally into paper muffin cases – this recipe makes up to 12 muffins.
  5. Then bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes at 200 degrees Celsius/392 degrees Fahrenheit/Gas Mark 6, until they are fully risen and golden brown.
  6. Once baked, leave the muffins to cool on a cooling wire before serving.

Here’s hoping Costa will share a recipe for one of their coffees soon!
