January 19th: National Popcorn Day

Whether you’re having a house party, a sleepover, or watching a movie, there is always one snack that you need to have – popcorn! Popcorn is one of those things that are always on your grocery list, because it is one of the most commonly eaten snacks out there.

You always see it at concession stands during sports games, concerts, at movie theaters, amusement parks, and so many other places. The world loves popcorn so much that it has its own day.

January 19th is officially known as National Popcorn Day. To celebrate, we are listing some of the most interesting facts about our favorite treat.

1.) Popcorn kernels can pop up to 3 feet in the air.

2.) Poppeed popcorn comes in two shapes: “snowflake” and “mushroom.” Movie theaters sell “snowflake” popcorn because it’s much bigger.

3.) Unpopped popcorn kernels found at the bottom of bowls/bags are called “spinsters” or “old maids.” Good quality popcorn should produce less than 2% spinsters and 98% popped kernels.

4.) Popcorn was used for decorative and ceremonial purposes in the 16th century for headdresses, necklaces, and ornaments in Aztec ceremonies. They wore it to honor Tlaloc, the god of maize and fertility.

5.) Americans consume 17 BILLION quarts of popped popcorn each year! This is enough to fill the Empire State Building 18 times!
