Is it possible to find love online in 2017?

Every generation has its own way of expressing love. For quite a long time, we had the tradition of courtly love where the man would pursue a woman and write sonnets and blazon for her.

Then came the era of epistles where lovers used to exchange letters for expressing their feelings for each other. Even in the fictional world, letters created a realm of their own.

Frederik Wentworth’s letter to Anne Elliot in Jane Austen’s “Persuasion” is eternal.

In the 21st century, the way to express love has changed. In an era of messaging and email, a handwritten letter is a rarity. People swipe and chat on dating apps like Tinder to explore the realm of romance.

But the statistics show that while the technology gives one more options and ways to explore love, it is also a cause why people prefer singledom over the relationship.

With fake profiles storming Facebook every day, people have already bore the consequences of online love escapades.

So, is it possible to find love online in 2017?

I would say yes. The reason being that it does not really depend on the time you are living in. True love is a consequence of your partner’s understanding of your feelings and character and vice-versa. This can only be achieved through one-on-one conversation.

Take “Before Sunrise” and “After Sunset” for instance. You see characters talking. The whole time. What is so great about it? I’ll tell you. Both the characters talk and through their conversation builds the narrative.

The same thing happens with us. If you want to chat, you only continue chatting if you are able to build on the past conversations. If not, then, you move out.

Dating apps like Tinder have definitely given us more options when it comes to exploration. You swipe, you meet and then you decide if you want to continue talking and dating the person or not.

But it all comes to down to one thing, are you able to be yourself in the presence of the person both offline and online? Technology is just a medium.

So, yes, you can find love online. The success depends on the kind of people you meet because as mentioned earlier, there are a lot of people pretending to be someone else on their profiles.

Technology is just a medium. It cannot guarantee anything. The only person who can tell you if you will love online or not is you.
