Whether you’re about to graduate from college or you’re looking to climb the career ladder and find a new job, what you wear is important. Of course, your CV, skills, experience, and confidence will be what lands you the job, but looking smart and professional is important.
Below, we’ve put together just some of the things that you should think about when headed to your next job interview. If you want to stand out from the crowd and be taken seriously as a candidate, then these interview fashion tips and tricks are bound to come in useful…
Cover up the tats
This is a controversial one, but important to note nonetheless. We’ve come a long way in the past decade, and whilst the majority of us love and embrace body art, in the boardroom, you might get a different reaction. If you’ve got a lot of visible tattoos on your arms and legs, then cover them over during your job interview to be on the safe side. You won’t know whether your prospective boss will appreciate your tattoos, so keep them hidden until you get the job.
Don’t overdo the makeup
Something else you might want to consider when attending a job interview is your makeup. It is best to go for a subtle and professional look rather than overdo it, so consider asking one of your friends or family members to give you a helping hand. Match your makeup to your skin tone and don’t wear false eyelashes or clumpy mascara, and consider a natural-looking lip gloss. If you enter a meeting looking like you’re going for a night out, you won’t impress.
Wear something smart
Knowing what to wear during a job interview can be tough, and the truth is that it depends on the company and industry. In the creative industry, like marketing, fashion, or lifestyle, then you might get away with a loose-fitted summer dress and a pair of flats, but in the corporate world, you’re better off wearing something you’d expect the staff to wear.
Trouser suits are a great choice – they’re stylish, professional, and practical, demonstrating your commitment to the company and putting you in the best possible stead of success. And you don’t have to be boring – swap out the black or greys for light cream, or even a floral trouser suit if you fancy!
Accessorise – but be sensible
Finally, take a good long look at your accessories and make sure you’re not overdoing it. If you’re interviewing to be a model or work in the fashion industry, then to hell with it – wear what you want – but for anything else, you should keep it casual.
A necklace and smartwatch are fine, but make sure your accessories don’t detract from your face or make you look like you’re about to walk the runway. Avoid bracelets, distracting earrings and other trinkets, and make sure you have a sensible, practical handbag where you can keep a portfolio and iPad.
There you have it – just some of the ways in which you can look good during a job interview.
It doesn’t matter whether it’s your first ever job or you’re on to your tenth; all interviews can be scary, but if you look good, you’ll feel confident and will boss the interview. Good luck!
