Fuzzmas Advent Awards – Day Twenty Nine

Welcome to the Fuzzmas Advent Awards, a series running every day throughout December celebrating all our favourite things from 2018. Today, we are revealing our Authors of the Year!

2018 has been an amazing year in the book community! There has been so many great books released throughout 2018 and we’re so excited to be able to celebrate our favourite authors of the year!

Becky Albertalli

Becky has had an absolutely amazing year! Not only has she released her own book, but she also released a co-written book with best friend Adam Silvera – and her book Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda had its movie adaptation, Love, Simon released this year too!

Leah on the Offbeat, which was her solo novel of the year, is the companion novel to Simon vs, which not only gave us all of the Leah feels and finally saw our girl have the happy ending she deserves, it also gave us all of the Simon feels too! It was a sweet contemporary that again dealt with the ins and outs of dealing with your sexuality as a teenager and how hard that can be.

Later in the year, we then got What If It’s Us, which was co-written with Adam Silvera, which meant we were expecting it to make us cry and we weren’t wrong! What If It’s Us is such a cute, fun story that definitely gave us all of the feels and had us reaching for the tissues all at the same time. We are definitely crossing our fingers for a sequel or just for these two authors to join forces again in the future!

Ransom Riggs

Ransom Riggs is the author of the Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children series that captured our hearts back when it was first released in 2011. And, when Library of Souls was released in 2016 and the trilogy was completed we thought that was it, we wouldn’t get more books in this wonderful, strange world. But, Ransom Riggs had other plans for us.

This year, Ransom blessed us all by releasing a new book in the series, A Map of Days, not only that but we are getting two more books set in this world too! A Map of Days is a fantastic dip back into this world that we all love so much and we honestly cannot wait to see what is coming up in the next two books too!

Stephen King

Would it be a top authors list without the king of horror himself?! Stephen King has had a great year in terms of both books and TV this year with releasing The Outsider and Elevated as well as Castle Rock coming to our screens, It Chapter Two being in the making, Mr Mercedes being released and, on top of all of that, he won two Goodreads Choice awards. So, overall, Stephen King has had a fantastic year but, let’s talk about the books shall we?

The Outsider was definitely what we’ve come to expect from King. It was creepy and atmospheric as well as having an absolutely fantastic mystery element to it, keeping us on the edge of our seats and even giving us some references to the Mr. Mercedes trilogy.

Elevation, on the other hand, was a wonderful novella that filled our hearts quite a lot. It definitely touched on some of the issues of the world that we’re all currently fighting and hit quite close to home. It is only 135 pages which is obviously only a blink into what King can do but it was fantastic nonetheless and we all really loved it!

Sarah J Maas

We honestly don’t know how Sarah J Maas does it but we’ve had THREE new books released from her this year and we’ve loved each one of them! Near the start of the year, we got the newest addition to the A Court of Thorns and Roses series: A Court of Frost and Starlight, we then got a new release in the DC Icons series which has involved three different authors so far. Sarah’s entry was Catwoman: Soul Stealer. Then, to top of her incredible release year, we got the final installment in the Throne of Glass series: Kingdom of Ash.

Sarah is one of the absolute queens of fantasy and is definitely one of our favourite high fantasy authors. We are always looking forward to what she is up to next, especially now that Throne of Glass is finished, we cannot wait to see what is on the horizon next for her!

Not only has she released a number of books into the world this year, we have also had a tease of the A Court of Thorns and Roses movie!

Also, through all of this, she has been looking after her beautiful son! We are so happy for Sarah and everything she has done this year!

Cassandra Clare

And, our ultimate author of the year is the queen of urban fantasy, Cassandra Clare!

Cassandra Clare has been releasing books in the Shadowhunter world since way back in 2007 and since then, the series has just been growing in popularity and size! This year, we have had two additions to the series, one of the most anticipated YA releases of the year, Queen of Air and Darkness has just come out and we think it is fantastic!

As well as Queen of Air and Darkness, she has also released a collection of short stories called Ghosts of the Shadow Market that followed one of the favourite characters of the whole series: Jem. A story was released every month from April and we will be getting a bind up next year with two extra stories! It definitely added to the excitement of Queen of Air and Darkness and we love each of them!

On top of the excitement of Shadowhunters, Cassandra Clare also released the final book in her co-written series with best friend: Holly Black. Through the Magisterium series, we’ve seen a new side to both of these wonderful ladies as we are not used to seeing them both releasing middle grade novels but the series has been fantastic and we cannot wait to see if they join forces in the future!

Throughout December we will be running our advent awards, so check back daily to find out what we’re celebrating this Fuzzmas.
