Fuzzable Book Club: Amy’s Picks

Welcome to the Fuzzable book club, a monthly book club where writers at Fuzz talk about books they’ve read. This month’s piece is on top ‘Five Favourite Books‘. So, for today, we have Amy’s top five picks . . .

Number Five – ‘Spring-heeled Jack: The Harbinger’ by E.J.Davies

Crawling its way into Number Five on the list is the brand new Horror on the rooftops, ‘The Harbinger’ by debut author E.J.Davies. This one is definitely that one story that has been missing from your bookshelf that you didn’t even know you needed. This novel originated as part of UCLAN University’s Major Project which was chosen by their Postgraduate Masters Course students, to develop from manuscript into a real life book. This title was actually my own project which I solely worked on, copy edited, designed and turned into a physical book, which I am now proud to say is available to purchase from Waterstones.

When Newspaper reporter William English ventures out in search of the next big story, what he finds in return has the potential to not only ruin his life but also end it along with the entire world as he knows it. Based on the Legend of Spring-heeled Jack, The Harbinger reawakens your greatest nightmares. As murders begin to occur throughout London, who will stop the ultimate born killing machine? How many more must die? Who can control the beast? London is burning and soon the entire world will be too! be careful of the rooftops, “Springheeled Jack’l get ya!” Remember to always look up!

Number Four – ‘Dolly’ by Susan Hill

At Number Four is none other than the Queen of Horror herself – Susan Hill. Although Hill is best known for ultimate classic ‘The Woman In Black’, she has many more brilliant novels waiting to be re-discovered, Dolly is definitely one of them! If you are a sucker for a eerie story with suspense that keeps on building and building, leading to an almighty climax, I can’t recommend Dolly enough.

Dolly is one birthday present no child will ever want to receive. When young Edward visits his Aunt Kimbrel he has no idea that meeting cousin Leonora would introduce him new levels of evil. The phrase what comes around goes around is real in this story. Neglect Dolly and she will haunt you for the rest of your life, treat her how you would a child or she will treat your child as you did her . . .

Number Two – ‘The Tattooist of Auschwitz’ by Heather Morris

At Number Two is #1 International Bestseller ‘The Tattooist of Auschwitz’, the ultimate must read of 2018. If you’re one of those who loves a tear-jerking true story or just love books in general, I pledge that everyone and I mean everyone will hold this story in their hearts till the day they die, it is 100% a must have for your bookshelf!

When Lale Sokolov left his family home he had no idea his entire life would come crashing down, in the blink of an eye Lale finds himself thrown into a Nazi Concentration Camp. Doing what he can just to survive, one prisoner in particular gives him the strength to keep on fighting. Gita Furman is a rare gem in a pile of stones. Follow the true story of a man living in the depths of hell who risks his life to help others. Your heart will stop with the turn of every page, and fall to pieces as Lale and Gita are tragically separated. Will they find the strength to carry on? Will they ever see each other again? I can guarantee the last chapter will stick with you forever and have you sobbing like you never have before!

Number One – ‘Unnatural Causes’ by Dr Richard Shepherd

At Number Five and my current favourite guilty pleasure is the eye opening scientific wonder that is ‘Unnatural Causes’, written by the UK’s leading Forensic Pathologist Dr. Richard Shepherd. As a woman with an absolute passion for Forensics and all things Scientific, this book reignited the flame within me and reminded me to strive for my dreams. The inside look into the behind the scenes life of a Forensic Pathologist is the perfect read for anyone thinking about a career in science, and is one that you will not want to put down even after the final page.

We put all of our faith and trust into our crime investigation teams, but what is it actually like to have that career? For the majority of us the idea of attending to the bodies of the deceased is the thing of nightmares, but for others it’s their passion and their part in fighting for justice for the victim. Read as Dr. Shepherd opens his world up to us and shows us the truly honest struggles of his home life, balanced with such life changing work. Shed a tear as PTSD puts his entire world as he knows it in jeopardy, and celebrate as his love for his craft is reignited. Delving deep into some of the most well-known cases such as the Rachel Nickel murder, the Marchioness Disaster, the Hungerford Massacre and Princess Diana’s death, this is a book unlike anything else currently on the shelves.
