Transitioning into the adult world has been…weird. Every time I get a letter about my health insurance, it inevitably ends up in a forgotten pile on my desk. Every time someone talks to me about savings and retirement plans, I pretend to not hear them. I graduated from college this past May, and got a full-time job in September. My life is great, but somehow, I still haven’t gotten a grasp on that whole “be an adult thing.” So, I wonder, how does one successfully adult?
Balance your time.
I can only assume this is one aspect of adulting. It’s a bit shocking to realize just how much time everything takes. If I want to go to the gym, that’ll take an hour, hour and a half. Plus, I have to shower, so there’s another hour right there. But I also have to grocery shop, pay bills, sleep and have some semblance of a social life. How do I have enough time to do all of that?
Have some semblance of a social life.
I’ve quickly realized that a full-time job means seeing my friends a lot less than I used to. Usually, I’d run into them at least a couple times a week at school. But now, I only run into them if I make specific plans to see them. And, it’s even harder to coordinate schedules. So, I guess my social life will inevitably evolve into me gossiping with my coworkers for brief increments during the work day.
Get addicted to coffee.
I suppose this is but one of the harsh realities of becoming a full-time adult based off my high intake of peppermint mochas. I never drank coffee before – and it still makes my stomach feel a little funky – but it’s slowly becoming a true staple in my diet.
Learn how to budget.
How am I supposed to factor my five peppermint mochas a week into my budget when health insurance is so expensive? Seriously. It boggles my mind just how little of my paycheck I end up taking home, and then I’m obligated to spend it on actual stuff I need. Gross.
I suppose these are the four goals I’m aiming for as I transition into adulthood. It’s difficult, but I believe I’ll get there eventually. Please, hit me up with your adulting tips. I definitely need them.
