Fuzzable Blogs: My Top Ten (Eleven) Movies of 2018

2018 has been a great year for movies. There has been so many good movies out in 2018 from Marvel to horror to action to romance, I have seen so many great movies at the cinema this year and I thought I would talk about my top ten for 2018 now. So, let’s get into it, shall we?

I’m actually going to start with a couple of honorable mentions!

The Meg got so much stick when it first came out. People did not like this movie and said it was bad and cheesy but I actually really liked it. I read the book back in about 2013 and really enjoyed the movie adaptation of it and thought it was generally quite tense.

Venom was a movie I was so nervous going into it. But, I really enjoyed it! Yes, some of the plot was a bit of a mess, the beginning could have had some parts cut out of it and I think it ended quite suddenly but I did really like it. Venom was so funny and I generally really liked him as a character and the film overall surprised me.

The Darkest Minds was such a great movie! I absolutely loved the book and I thought the movie did it so well too, there were parts missed out and added in but overall, I thought it was a great adaptation. It was so funny and sweet in some places but then was very tense and had me on the edge of my seat in the right places. It’s about kids with superpowers and then each kid is labelled with a colour depending on how dangerous the government deems their powers to be. It’s such an incredible movie and I will definitely be rewatching it a lot in the future!

And my last honourable mention is Wreck It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks The Internet. This movie only just missed out on my top ten, I really enjoyed this one! It was so sweet and so funny with an absolutely amazing message behind it. I loved the first one so much and this one really did live up to the hype for me.

Top Ten Movies of 2018

11) The Predator

Honestly, I am so surprised that this is on my top ten of 2018 and not my worst movies of 2018 because I really didn’t think I was going to like it. Before going into this, I’d only seen the first Predator movie and did like it but I only really went to see The Predator  because my dad really wanted to see it but I ended up absolutely LOVING The Predator.

It was very violent which as I understand, is keeping in with the other Predator movies but it was also actually so funny. I found myself laughing throughout this movie so many times, especially when we had the Haunted Mansion ride reference, I was so shook I just couldn’t stop laughing. I also thought the story of this movie was so good, the main Predator coming down to Earth and basically killing all of the other ones and looking for the main character’s son because he had his helmet and part of his armour.

So yes, overall, I did really enjoy this one and can’t wait to see if we are going to get a follow up because I can see it happening, so maybe see it appear on my top ten movies of 2020? Who knows.

10) Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

I know a lot of people will probably have this movie a lot further up in their lists but it only made number 9 for me which just kind of shows me how many great movies I’ve seen this year. I absolutely love the Wizarding World both Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts are amazing franchises especially Harry Potter because I grew up with them and I really like Fantastic Beasts because the creatures are so fascinating and it feels a lot more grown up and CoG definitely carries that theme on apart from the fact there aren’t enough creatures for me.

It’s such an intense movie and I actually really loved that they had really uped the stakes in this movie. Newt is such a great character who I really love but honestly, I don’t think the series is actually about Newt, to me, it’s more about Credence and him discovering who he is. And, I really love Credence and I really think he’s such an interesting character who has this heartbreaking backstory so I am really excited to see where they take this.

The only issues I had with this movie were that it was kind of slow going to start with but also if you have seen the first one, you know what happened with a certain character and the way they got around that just really annoyed me because it was such an easy way out. But overall, I really liked this movie and the direction that this series is going in.

9) Ant-Man and The Wasp

We have been blessed with Marvel movies this year, all three of them have been absolutely fantastic! So fantastic in fact that Black Panther, which is amazing, didn’t quite make my list! But, I really, really loved Ant-Man and The Wasp. When the first Ant-Man movie came out, I had absolutely no expectations and came out loving it, with Ant-Man and The Wasp came out, I had absolutely huge expectations and again, came out absolutely loving it. I will say, I think I enjoyed the first one a little bit more but Ant-Man and The Wasp was a fantastic entry into the MCU.

It was such a nice change from the heartbreak that was Infinity War (More on that later kids) and had me laughing so many times throughout the movie. But, as well as having its funny moments, it also has a very heavy story line in it within Ghost and it had my heart breaking for her. She was one of my favourite Marvel anti-heroes and I really hope we see more of her. Talking of great female characters, The Wasp oh my goodness, she is such a badass and I absolutely loved her so much and I am really worried about her because of the post credit scene.

Ant-Man again is just one of my favourite characters within the MCU, we have so many serious characters and story lines and Ant-Man is just a breath of fresh air within that. He loves his daughter and his family and cares so much about the people around him and that’s what I love so much about him. Overall, I really enjoyed this movie and the only issue I had with it was that I thought the ending was so abrupt I was just like oh okay, it’s the end!

8) Solo: A Star Wars Story

Right, Solo was my second most anticipated movie of 2018 as if you know me, you know how much Star Wars as a franchise means to me. I had my midnight showing tickets booked as soon as they were released but, saying all that, I was beyond scared for this movies. I was terrified that this movie was going to be absolutely awful because a lot of people were saying it wasn’t the best and fans were trash talking it before the trailer had even dropped BUT, I loved Solo so much.

No, it wasn’t a film we necessarily needed but it’s a film that I’m glad exists. I know this is an unpopular opinion but Han has never been one of my favourite Star Wars characters which is another reason I was nervous going into this movie but I came out loving him a little bit more. I thought Alden Ehrenreich did a fantastic job as Han and was a true follow up to Harrison Ford in my opinion! Also Donald Glover as Lando was absolutely GENIUS. Overall, Solo was such a fun flick that had funny moments, action, tension and was a great addition to the Star Wars universe and I hope we get the sequel!

7) The Greatest Showman

I’m sure for a lot of people, this is probably top of their list for 2018 and I know it came out last year but it was the very end of the year and it didn’t really start to take off until this year so sue me. ANYWAY, The Greatest Showman is such a beautiful film, from beginning to end, it’s just incredible. The music is absolutely amazing, I love all of the songs on this soundtrack which is very unusual for me as there is normally at least one that I don’t like but this soundtrack is just in another league! I love all of the characters and find some of them so inspiring. And, it just has a beautiful story.

Out of all of the films on this list, I’ve probably watched this the most times apart from maybe my number one but we’ll get into that later. But yes, The Greatest Showman is just a fantastic film that I think everyone should watch at least once in their life. I’m just glad I watched this film and will definitely be watching it a lot more in the future!

6) Halloween

I only watched the original Halloween earlier this year but straight away it became my favourite horror film of all time. I remember last year when I made a similar list, I said I wasn’t a huge horror film which has definitely changed through 2018 because now I’m a huge horror movie fan and Halloween is definitely my favourite! So, when I first saw the trailer for the new one, I was a little nervous but also so excited. Nervous because I mean have you seen the other sequels? They’re all terrible apart from Halloween 2, that one is a good one but apart from that, I really don’t like any of the others and yes that includes the Rob Zombie ones! But excited because it looked like it was ignoring all of the sequels and going back to its roots and that was right!

Halloween was so tense, it had all of the tension from the first film and was also so scary, I had to watch through my hands at some points! Jamie Lee Curtis reprising her role as Laurie Strode was just amazing and she was absolutely fantastic as expected. I also loved the new characters in this movie and thought all of the female characters were just so strong and I love that we see that a lot in horror movies. Obviously, of course, having Michael Myers back was just amazing, to me, he is definitely the most iconic villain in horror and I’m glad he finally got the sequel that he deserved.

Overall, was this better than the original? No but was it the best Halloween sequel there’s been? Definitely! Nothing was ever going to be better than the original but this one gives it a good go!

5) A Simple Favor

At the start of the year, this film wasn’t anywhere near my radar, I wasn’t even aware of the book or anything before the first trailer was released but as soon as I saw it had my favourite actress in, Blake Lively, I was hyping it up! A Simple Favour has this incredibly interesting and intricate plot where you don’t really trust any of the characters and you never really know what’s going on. We follow our main character Stephanie who becomes best friends with a woman named Emily and then one day, she goes missing. I don’t want to say anymore than that because I don’t want to give it away.

But, seriously guys, if you haven’t seen A Simple Favour, you should definitely watch it! I think it’s one of the most underappreciated films of the year. It’s just so fantastic and was definitely one of my absolutely favourite movies of the Autumn.

4) Bohemian Rhapsody

I really hope this movie appears on a lot of people’s best of the year lists because it truly deserves nothing less! I think we were all nervous when Bohemian Rhapsody was announced especially with all of the problems they had behind the scenes, but, the finished product is just absolutely incredible and I love it with my entire heart. Freddie Mercury is a true icon for everyone and Rami Malek did the most incredible job at playing him. I really felt all of his struggles and triumphs. In fact, everyone in the movie just acted it incredibly and I was laughing, I was in floods of tears come the end, I just loved it.

Also, I mean, come on, best soundtrack of the year? Let’s be honest, when I finished the film, all I did was for a straight three weeks was have Queen’s greatest hits on repeat because it just rekindled my absolute love for a band I grew up on. It was just so amazing to find out more about this band that we all love and treasure and see what they went through as a band. Bohemian Rhapsody is just a true masterpiece and I would watch it everyday of my life if I could. It will definitely be a film I pick up and watch when I’m feeling really low and uninspired!

3) Into The Spider-Verse

I have en excited about this movie since it was first announced last year, it’s animated, it has Spiderman into it, I was so excited. Then, I went through some phases where I wasn’t as excited about it but then I saw it and this film absolutely blew me away. I’m actually still in shock that this movie was as incredible as it is and I really cannot hype this film up enough honestly.

Not only is the storyline of Into The Spider-Verse so interesting and heartwarming with so many important messages about friendship and family but the film also looks absolutely stunning. The animation in this movie is just so beautiful and so different to what we’ve seen before. It just looks like we’re watching a comic book come to life on screen, down to even the parts where what’s happening appears in boxes on the screen. It just works so well with the movie and as much as I do want a live action version because I think it would be just as fantastic, it just works so amazingly well as an animated classic and an amazing edition to the Spiderman movies. Also, the soundtrack is really good, all of the songs just fit so well with the movie it kind of reminded me of Baby Driver in that way and I absolutely loved it.

Overall, this movie is amazing and I’m so glad that I got the chance to see it! If you think this movie looks interesting or you like comic book movies, please go and see this one, it will completely blow you away!

2) Avengers: Infinity War

There was no doubt in the world that this film was going to make my top of the year list, the only surprising thing is that it isn’t number one on my list. Avengers: Infinity War has been one of the most anticipated movies of the last ten years, ever since Iron Man was released and it didn’t disappoint at all. Seeing all of these characters that I love come together in a brilliant movie was just everything I needed and more. I saw this movie five times at the cinema and felt myself get something new out of it every time that I saw it, picked up on new details and just fell in love all over again. Marvel has truly taken over my life over the last ten years and I don’t see that changing any time soon, it has got me through some of my hardest times and Infinity War is a brilliant climax of the MCU and I cannot wait for the next part!

This movie was just so funny and tense and heartbreaking, I was laughing one moment and sobbing into my popcorn the next! It was so good just experiencing it with so many people, the whole cinema gasping in certain moments, cheering when Captain America appeared, the collective WHAT? When it ended. It’s definitely one of the best films of the last ten years and I know I’ll be watching it for the next ten years to come.

1) Love, Simon

And here we are, at my number one movie of 2018 which is Love, Simon. I have been anticipating this movie since it got announced. I read the book at one of the lowest points of my life and it turned out to be one of the most important books I’ve ever read. So, when the movie was released I was beyond excited. I was lucky enough to actually see it at an early screening and was just sobbing throughout most of the third act of the movie. Love, Simon is a beautiful coming of age movie about a boy, called Simon who is gay and it’s about him coming to terms with that and everyone around him coming to terms with it. He then finds a boy named Blue and then start emailing each other everyday and you’re just routing for them throughout the whole movie and the ending is just so beautiful.

Love, Simon is such an important movie in terms of representation. We have needed a movie with LGBTQ+ representation in the mainstream media forever and Love, Simon is just fantastic in terms of representation. To me personally as a bisexual teenager, I needed this movie so much and I’m just glad that it’s out in the world to show young people and adults that it’s okay to be who you are and that they’ve got this, they can win this fight. I went to see this movie five times, once on my own, and just cried every single time at the same point. It is just everything that I’ve ever needed in a movie and more. I’m just glad it’s out there in the world and I will be watching it again and again for the rest of my life.

If you haven’t seen Love, Simon yet please just go and watch it! It is one of the most beautiful, heartwarming and heartbreaking films of 2018!
