Fuzzable Blogs: August 9th – Escapism

Escapism is using something such a TV show, a movie, a book etc to escape from real life for a while.

Escapism is something that I find myself doing a lot more especially in the last year or so. There’s been a lot of things going on in my life that have made me feel like I’m backed into a corner. Between family issues, friend issues, college and preparing for university, I’ve been feeling stressed and just generally awful. But, then I’ll pick up a book or start a TV show and I feel like I can get lost in it and forget about all of that for a second. So, I just thought I’d share the things that I’ve been using as my main escapes lately.

Baby Driver

There’s been a lot of hype around Baby Driver recently and with good reason. I’ve seen it twice at the cinema now and both times I have been completely lost in it. In the characters, the story, the music and the intensity of it. This film is honestly fantastic and deserves all the hype it has at the moment. It’s so fantastic that it may have actually become my favourite film of all time which is scary to me because my favourite film has been my favourite film for twelve years now.

Anyway, Baby Driver is about a getaway driver called Baby who relies on his music to get him through. The way that the music is timed with the actions of the film is absolutely breathtaking. There are so many subtle, beautiful effects in this film that need to be talked about more. It’s so intense and incredible that it would be impossible not to get lost in it, throughout you will feel completely invested in the characters and the story and I cannot recommend this film enough.

Teen Wolf

Teen Wolf is a popular show aimed mostly at young adults. The show follows the main character Scott McCall as he adjusts to becoming a werewolf. This show is one of my absolute favourite shows of all time and one of my biggest means of escapism. I have seen every episode of this show about twenty times because I just love it so much. Even if it has broken my heart more times than I can explain. It also introduced me to my favourite TV character of all time; Josh Diaz and I will forever be thankful for that. I love this show with everything I have.

With so many characters and plot lines it’s hard not to get invested in this show. Yes, sometimes the effects are a little cheesy and you will more than likely cry over your favourite characters. But, again, I cannot recommend this show enough. It is perfect for binge watching and is perfect if you need to get lost in a TV show.

The Maze Runner trilogy by James Dashner

If you know me, you’ll know that The Maze Runner is my favourite book series of all time. I adore this trilogy with every single fiber of my being okay. But yes, I do ignore the prequels. I love this series so much that I have eight copies of it, two of which are in a different language. If you haven’t read this series than I highly, highly recommend it. No matter how many times I read this series, I still feel the same emotions I felt the first time I read it.

It’s set in a dystopian future where a disease has broken out across the world. It follows a boy called Thomas who wakes up in an elevator and ends up in a place called “The Glade.” Just like everyone that has been there before him, he has no memory of his previous life and why he’s in the glade. Everyone in the glade has a certain job and Thomas wants to become a runner because he wants to know more about the maze. This series is absolutely incredible and I love every single twist and turn through the three books. Although, just be warned because we don’t talk about page 253 of The Death Cure.

Music

Music is probably my main tool for escapism. I love music so damn much and I am so thankful that it exists. Again, if you know me, you’ll know that I love a very wide range of music and all of it helps me in one way or another. From my favourite band to songs that just make me smile for reasons I can’t explain. Music is something that is completely magic.

There is a song out there for every single mood. There’s a song out there that everybody can relate to in one way or another. Music is something that brings so many people together and allows people to just have fun and smile and laugh and cry. It is just one of the most beautiful forms of art and I cannot imagine life without it. Not only has it been there for me when nobody else has, it’s also brought me some of my favourite people. For example, me and my best friend bonded on our first day of college because of music. I’ve met people at concerts and on Twitter because of our love for music.

I love to put my headphones on and just getting lost in the music and the words. Music is always going to be a huge part of my life. I have lyrics tattooed on me, I go to concerts on a regular and more often then not have my headphones on.

So yes, those are some of my main means of escapism. I know using TV series, films etc don’t always work for everyone but they do for me and I hope you guys can enjoy some of the things I’ve recommended.
