Exclusive Interview: Makeup By Jaack

Jack Emory is the British beauty boy who is taking the makeup world by storm. Known for his incredible creativity and his sparkly personality, he’s now one of the faces of Beauty Bay and Sleek Makeup. Jack’s breath taking talent has seen him gain nearly half a million Instagram followers, 170,000 YouTube subscribers and he’s had a staggering 4 million views on the channel.

We got the chance to speak to Jack to find out what it’s like being a beauty guru, his future plans and of course we asked contour advice.

Hey Jack, for anyone who hasn’t heard of you yet, can you tell us a little about your makeup journey?

I started playing around with makeup just over 3 years ago, which honestly feels like just yesterday. I was really inspired by drag culture and so a lot of my early looks were drag looks! I actually used to shave my eyebrows off so I didn’t have to cover them every time. From there I guess I shifted more to ‘commercial beauty’ looks, more wearable makeup (kind of).

The past 3 years have been Revolutionary for men who wear makeup, what do you think has been a catalyst for these awesome changes?

Social media has definitely played a role in exposing men in the beauty industry, even though we’ve always been around. I think we owe a lot to David Bowie, Boy George, Pete Burns and figures like them who essentially paved a way for people like me to be able to do what I do today and have it be so celebrated. The world is constantly changing and evolving, acceptance should be a natural thing and I think people are realising that more and more every day.

You have the most incredible makeup styling, which is extremely creative and beautiful, where do you draw inspiration from?

Thank you so much! Firstly, a huge inspiration for me are my followers, the people that show me never ending love and support. To have so many people show you such authentic love and admiration is an indescribable feeling. They’ve changed my life and I’m inspired everyday to do my best because I owe it to them, for what they’ve given me.
Other artists inspire me for sure. Creative people in general just give me so much life! To see someone who has passion is such a creative turn on for me.

You’ve been the face of some amazing campaigns, how did your very first one make you feel?

It’s not like anything I’ve ever experienced. For a brand or an individual to want me as a face for their products, their brand, their campaign is crazy to me. On the flip side, I do have insecurities so I often wonder why they would want me out of everyone, what’s so special about me? I definitely need to learn to see in myself what other people see. But I’m always so appreciative and grateful, it will never be normal to me.

Which brands would you like to work with next?

Where do I even start.. there are so many amazing brands that I love. If I had to pick, ABH for sure! They’re one of my favourite brands ever! MAC, LOREAL, Maybelline, Morphe, Urban Decay.. way to many to name!

Which celebs would you love to give a full glam Jack look to?

So I have three celebs that are my joint number 1’s who I just absolutely live for! Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Anniston & Jessie J.. but if I had to pick one, Jessie J 100%!

There’s sadly still a lot of stigma about guys wearing makeup, what advice would you give a teenage boy who is finding himself through makeup?

What can I say that hasn’t already been said a million times over? I think it’s so important to listen to the people that are supporting you. I know from experience that seeing one bad comment in a sea of good comments can just ruin your day. That person is a drop in the ocean, they’re irrelevant. Focus on the love, the positive, the people who care and you will be so much happier! Anyone can jump on Instagram and leave a hate comment, it’s cowardly and shameful. They obviously have the free time.. boy you don’t! You’re too busy being talented and amazing!

This is an essential question, do you have any advice to get our contours as on point as yours?

Oh practise and a prayer! Contour took me so long to get the hang of. Find the right brushes (although I seem to use a different brush to everyone else.. I use ones that look like large eye shadow blenders) & find the right undertones!

Lastly, if there was to be a signature  MakeupByJaack lipstick, what colour/ finish would it be, and what would you call it?

Oh a pinky nude for sure! I love my reds, my browns etc but a pinky nude is such a go to for me. My favourite show ever is ‘Charmed’ so I’d probably name it after that!

A massive thank you to Jack for taking time out of his busy day to speak with us!
