A Spark of Fire is the first book in The Firelighters series. It is the debut novel of author Jennifer L. Rothwell.
“On her sixteenth birthday, Felix prepares to leave the orphanage where she has lived since she was born. What lies ahead of her? Armed with her baby blanket and a library card, she heads for the Magistry of London, ruled by Magicians, including Corbin Godspell. She hopes to find information about her parents, who died shortly after her birth, but where should she begin?”
Leaving the orphanage is the start of a life changing journey for Felix. She is tested and challenged so much throughout this book that we really felt for her and are a bit worried about what the author is going to put her through in the next book. She also finds herself a family.
Felix journey to the magistry in London- a London that is nothing like the London we all know and love, but equally captivating and fascinating- is full of suspenseful twist and turns. It has you turning the page to see what happens next.
The vibrant cast of characters that Felix meets along the way further enrich the story making you love Felix even more.
We don’t really like the character of Nigel at the moment, he seems to be slightly over shadowed by the more colourful characters all who have many layers to them that are peeled back as the book progresses such as DW,Fiddle, Larkin and even Nanny Maude. Even his closeness to and relationship with Felix towards the end of the book didn’t endear him to us. Maybe in book 2?
We also hope to learn more about Linus as the character the author has created, again has many layers to be explored. That is one key strength that Jennifer Rothwell has as a writer, her ability to create multi layered characters.
With a Spark of Fire, Jennifer L. Rothwell has created the foundation of a world that is perfect for curling up on the sofa in front of the fire-( we only wish it was the one in the reading room of London Library) -and loosing yourself for a few hours. It brings home the message to readers that you should get to know people before judging them.
A Spark of Fire is full of magic, intrigue, mystery and love. If you loved Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, The Mortal Instruments, The Wind on Fire Series and the His Dark Materials Series, then you cannot go wrong reading this.
