Tis the season to…be in love? Is that a thing? It’s totally a thing.
February 14th, otherwise known as Valentine’s Day, brings love and romance to the forefront of everyone’s mind. There are red and pink hearts everywhere you look, tons of glitter and roses and even lacy lingerie. There are ads telling you to ‘buy this for the one you love’ or tips on how to make your Valentine’s Day plans extra sexy. You can hear playlists on streaming music sites and see romantic DVDs on sale at your local department store. Everyone is geared up to love and to be in love. (See what I did there?)
What you don’t see much of, this time of year, is a go-to guide for the single girl – or guy – and how to make your Valentine’s Day just as fun.
Now, this isn’t coming from some scorned woman, I’m all for being in love if you’ve got it and if you don’t but you want to – go on out there in that sexy lace get up and find it. More power to you. Right now, I’m actually stuck between totally crushing on someone awesome but not knowing how to tell them and being absolutely fine on my own. It is what it is.
So when I go to Target and buy cute heart cut-outs and pop over to Michaels for some glitter, and the cashier asks me who I’m going to be making valentines for. My response? My son and I just love to make crafts. When I buy The Vow on DVD the cashier smiles at me and says it’s the perfect movie to watch with your significant other. That may be good and well, but it’s also a great movie to watch by myself with a coffee on Friday night. Ya know?
So I decided to make a plan of my own for Valentine’s Day, and for any other person out there who thinks holidays about love shouldn’t be defined to romance alone. We can love our mates, we can love ourselves, we can love Norman Reedus, am I right?
First: Buy some wine and some cute wine glasses.
If you wanna spend the evening alone, or with your pals, wine is a must. If wine isn’t your drink of choice, there are a ton of drink options that are red and pink and delicious if you google V-Day drinks. Regardless of what you prefer, put the drinks in a cute glass and enjoy. Wine out of the cup you drink out of at dinner just isn’t as neat, and even if you’re not loved up, you should feel pretty awesome on Valentine’s Day.
Next: Rent that totally cliche romance movie.
I just bought The Vow and can’t wait to watch it on Valentine’s Day, and that’s just one film. There’s The Notebook, Love and Basketball, Crazy, Stupid, Love, and a ton of other movies that have totally handsome/beautiful couples in them that go through ups and downs and end up together. That’s cool, that’s the sort of story I like, even if it’s not happening in my own life currently. You can get some popcorn too if you want some, it’s not my gig right now, or even some chocolate covered strawberries. It’s always more fun to eat a snack while you’re watching a movie.
Bonus points if you go to Target and get those cuddly blankets with the hearts that they’ve got on sale right now. Mine is pink and red, I’m stoked on it.
Then: Get with your friends.
Odds are, you’re not the only single one in your group of friends, and if you are, who cares. Call up your pals and say you want to have a Valentine’s Day get-together. You can invite couples, invite your single friends, invite your mates who had a kid who usually spend their evenings in. Get everyone together that you love and enjoy the day. You’ve got wine, you’ve got a cute movie, now you just need the company to mix with it. Don’t count yourself out just because you don’t have a date on Valentine’s Day, you deserve some company too.
Next: Make some themed goodies.
Everyone loves to bake, not everyone is great at it, but that doesn’t matter here. Find some recipes with some heart shaped whatever, and make them! You can bake goodies, cook a meal, decorate with those plates and napkins with hearts and quotes on them. It’s fun! There are a ton of meal options for Valentine’s Day that doesn’t involve waiting in line at a restaurant for 2 hours where your food might not be cooked well because the entire place is packed. Forget that mess and have fun yourself.
Then: Be a kid again and make some valentines.
We all love craft stores on a regular day, but they’re even better this time of year. So go make something awesome! Get the frills and the glitter and the shine and all of that and make some valentines for your loved ones. You can look up corny pickup lines, make celebrity inspired cards, and have a blast. It’s super fun to be creative, plus, making things always inspires a happy little part of your spirit and you’ll be in a great mood all evening.
Last, but not least, make a playlist.
If you haven’t been listening to I Don’t Wanna Live Forever and Love Me Now on repeat for weeks already, what are you doing? If you have – like us – add some more songs to that pair and make a perfect playlist. There are a ton of romantic tunes that you can add to your Valentine’s Day jam list that will make you feel awesome, whether you’re in love or not! Spotify has ideas for you, you can google them, or you can just work it out from memory. We recommend adding some One Direction classics because, well, they’re perfect.
When you’ve got your friends together, dance around with those wine glasses (bonus points for getting lids on them first) and sing way too loud into like hair brushes or whatever. It’ll be a blast. (extra bonus for taking pictures of it all).
So, don’t be down in the dumps if you’re spending Valentine’s Day single, being single doesn’t mean being alone. If you’ve recently had your heart broken, add an additional step and cry it out after you drink that wine and watch that soppy movie. You’ll feel better because of it and remember that you deserve the world, not someone who was too afraid to give it to you.
Go out and have a perfect Valentine’s Day everyone, Tweet us some photos of how you spend yours!
