Are you in the process of applying to colleges, or transferring schools? There are many aspects in choosing the right one, such as size, majors and minors, cost, distance from home, and of course, the location.
The location of the school where you will be spending the next two to four years is extremely important. I can say from personal experience that attending school in a city has benefited my life in so many ways. We know that a city setting isn’t for everyone, but it is definitely something to consider.
Here are 5 reasons to attend college in a city!
1.) The opportunities
I am currently attending college in Philadelphia. We have professors and teacher assistants with a lot of experience in the field from well-known companies. They give us insight into what it’s like behind-the-scenes of the work place and what it takes to get to their position. They’ve told stories of how they networked with people around the city and how their connections helped them find jobs. There are various companies in Philadelphia that are looking for interns, volunteers, and potential employees. It is our responsibility to not let those opportunities slip through our fingers.
2.) The people
You will come across different people from all walks of life. Personally, I came from a small town with little diversity and since entering college, I’ve noticed a huge difference. People learn to be a little more open-minded, kind, and overall better prepared for the future by being exposed to a variety of people. Those same people can be potential co-workers, employers, or clients.
3.) The events
So many events have happened in my two years of attending college in Philadelphia, such as the Pope coming to Independence Mall, the Democratic National Convention, and many more. Being in a city means you’re constantly in the center of the action.
4.) Plenty of things to do
There are many colleges out there where you have to walk miles in order to get to the closest mall or movie theater – that is, unless you have a car. Living in the heart of a city means that everything that you will ever need or want to do is conveniently located just a short bus or subway ride away. There are so many concerts you can attend, movies you can see, clubs to go to, and places to eat! There will always be something to do.
5.) Develop street smarts
As stated above, you’ll probably be using public transportation often for reasons such as a fun night out, shopping with friends, or even job interviews. Learning how to use public transportation is something everyone should do in their lives, because you never know when you’re going to need it. From using buses, taxis, subways, and planes, public transportation will get you where you need to go.
