Netflix is an on-demand streaming service, but it also provides its own original films and TV shows. It can be difficult choosing what to watch, so we’ve compiled a list of 10 Netflix original TV series you need to watch!
We have a selection of series for you to delve into or find out more about. These range from Marvel’s Jessica Jones to recently released GLOW. Sci-fi, comedy, crime drama and animation; there will be something for everyone!

1. Orange Is The New Black
Orange Is The New Black (OITNB) is a comedy crime drama series that first premiered on the 11th July 2013 on Netflix. It’s adapted from Piper Kerman’s memoir, Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison (2010), about her experiences at a federal women’s prison. The Netflix series revolves around Piper Chapman, and how she has to survive in prison, adapting to overcome multiple different struggles. Episodes often feature flashbacks from significant inmates’ or prison guards’ pasts, that come to explain how they ended up in prison or to develop their backstory. An aspect Orange Is The New Black focuses closely on is how overcrowding, guard brutality and funding cuts affect the prisoners’ health and well-being. One of the main conflicts running throughout the series is when the warden’s efforts to give the prisoners their basic needs conflicts with the business interests of MCC, a private prison company. There’s no doubt in saying that Orange Is The New Black has become one of the streaming services’ most popular original series. For its second season, the series received four Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series. The series has also received six Golden Globe nominations, an American Film Institute Award and a Peabody Award.

2. Jessica Jones
Marvel’s Jessica Jones is an action crime drama series that first premiered on the 20th November 2015. It’s based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name and is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series stars Jessica Jones, a former superhero who reboots her life by opening her own detective agency and becoming a private investigator; dealing with cases that involve people with incredible abilities. IGN has named Jessica Jones the best Netflix original programming series released to date. In January 2016, Netflix renewed Jessica Jones for a second season.

3. Santa Clarita Diet
Santa Clarita Diet is a comedy horror series that premiered on the 3rd February 2017, with 10 episodes in its first season. It portrays the lives of Sheila and Joel Hammond who are real estate agents in Santa Clarita, California. Their lives change and take a dark turn when Sheila, played by Drew Barrymore, goes through a transformation – becoming a zombie. The first season has received generally positive reviews, but there has been criticism for the number of graphic scenes. In late March 2017, Netflix announced that the series had been renewed for a second season, which will premiere in 2018.

4. BoJack Horseman
One of the most different ones compared to the rest on this list is BoJack Horseman. BoJack Horseman is a comedy drama series in the form of animation. The series’ first season premiered on the 22nd August 2014, with a Christmas special premiering on the 19th December. It stars Will Arnett as the title character, BoJack Horseman, with the supporting cast including Aaron Paul, Paul F. Tompkins, Alison Brie and Amy Sedaris. The series is set in an alternate world where humans and humanoid-esque animals live side by side. BoJack Horseman was the star of a sitcom in the ’90s, Horsin’ Around, but is now washed up, complaining about anything, living in Hollywood (later known as ‘Hollywoo’), trying to make a return to celebrity relevance. The series is known for its dark comedy and satirical nature. BoJack Horseman currently has three seasons but has been renewed for a fourth, scheduled to premiere in the summer of 2017.

5. The Get Down
The Get Down is an American musical drama series. It premiered its first part that contained six episodes on the 12th August 2016. The series is set in the Bronx in the 1970s and follows the rise of hip-hop and disco music through the eyes of teenagers. The second part of the first season that contained five episodes was released on the 7th April 2017. In May 2017, Netflix announced that The Get Down would not be renewed for another season, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy what’s already been made!

6. GLOW
One of the newest Netflix originals is GLOW. GLOW is a comedy drama series set in Los Angeles, 1985 and premiered on the 23rd June 2017. The series revolves around a fictionalisation of the GLOW wrestling league from the 1980s. The creators of the show, Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, came across the 2012 documentary GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. They found the storyline intriguing as a way of exploring the aftermath of the 1970s Women’s Liberation Movement. A tension that’s maintained in the series is whether or not the league was exploiting or empowering women.

7. Stranger Things
I’m sure you all know about Stranger Things by now, but if you haven’t seen it and need more convincing, or want to find out more, continue reading! Stranger Things is a sci-fi, horror drama series that was released on the 15th July 2016. It’s created, written, directed and co-executive produced by the Duffer Brothers. The first season stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Finn Wolfhard and Noah Schnapp. The series is set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana in the 1980s. The first season focuses on the investigation of the disappearance of a young boy, and what terrifying dark forces his family, friends and the local police chief have to face in order to get him back, along with the sudden appearance of a telekinetic young girl. Stranger Things has quickly become one of Netflix’s most popular series, receiving positive reviews regarding its atmosphere, soundtrack, acting and homages to 1980s genre films. In August 2016, Netflix renewed the series for a second season, which is set the be released in October 2017.

8. Daredevil
Daredevil is an action, crime drama based on the Marvel Comics of the same name. It was released on Netflix on the 10th April 2015, with the second season being released on the 18th March 2016. The series is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Matt Murdock, otherwise known as Daredevil, fighting crime as a blind lawyer by day, and vigilante by night, with his other senses enhanced. Daredevil has been nominated for five Primetime Emmy Awards 2016 and has won the 2016 Saturn Award for Best New Media Television Series. In July 2016, Daredevil was renewed for a third season.

9. Black Mirror
Black Mirror is a British sci-fi thriller anthology series created by Charlie Brooker. It’s dark and satirical themes examine society, specifically that related to the consequences of new technology. Each episode is standalone and typically takes place within an alternate reality, or somewhere within the near future. Black Mirror provides different concepts, ideas and thought-provoking situations that will leave you seeing the world in a whole new light. The series was first broadcast on Channel 4 in 2011, but in late 2015, Netflix commissioned the third season.

10. A Series of Unfortunate Events
A Series of Unfortunate Events is another recently released Netflix original. It’s a dark comedy drama series based on the children’s novel series of the same name by Lemony Snicket. The show is an adventure drama series that stars Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Warburton, Malina Weissman, Louis Hynes and K. Todd Freeman. The first season premiered on the 13th January 2017 and consists of eight episodes that are adapted around the first four books of the series. The premise of the series surrounds the Baudelaire children who have been placed into the care of their distant relative, Count Olaf, after their parents were killed in a mysterious fire. A Series of Unfortunate Events has been renewed for a second and third season.
